Why Are My Windows Foggy? Causes and Fixes

Windows get foggy between the panes when the seal on the insulated glass unit fails and moist air gets in. Cleaning will not remove it because the moisture is inside the glass. In most cases the fix is replacing only the glass unit in your existing frame, not the whole window.

What fog between the panes means

Double- and triple-pane windows rely on a sealed gap between the panes. Years of Middle Tennessee heat, humidity and temperature swings eventually break that seal down and let moist air in. Once that happens, the haze is permanent. Double-pane seals installed 15 to 20 years ago are reaching the end of their expected life, which is why foggy glass is one of the most common calls we get.

Surface moisture is not the same thing

If you can wipe the moisture off, it is condensation on the surface, not a failed seal. Fog or droplets that stay trapped between the panes cannot be wiped away and point to seal failure.

What to do about foggy windows

Most companies jump straight to selling a full replacement. In most cases the frame, sash and hardware are still in good shape, so we replace only the insulated glass unit inside the existing frame. That keeps your trim, hardware and finish untouched and typically costs much less than replacing the window.

Common Questions

Can I fix foggy windows myself?

Cleaning will not work because the moisture is between the panes. The repair involves replacing the glass unit, which is why we inspect the window and handle it for you.

Do foggy windows mean I need new windows?

Usually not. In most cases only the glass unit needs to be replaced, and the rest of the window stays.
